Why AI Answers the Wrong Question (and the Context Fix)

Most bad AI answers aren't wrong. They're answers to a question you didn't ask.
You type a quick request, the model replies fast and fluently, and only halfway through do you realize it assumed the wrong audience, the wrong situation, the wrong version of you. It didn't misunderstand. It just filled in everything you left blank, and its guesses weren't yours. When I asked over a hundred of my readers about their biggest AI frustration, a quarter of them said "I never know how to phrase it." A lot of that comes down to one missing input: Context.
What Context actually is
Context is the first letter of the CROFTC framework, and it's the background the model needs before it starts: the situation, the product, the audience, the constraints of your real world. A model has no memory of your business, your customers, or what you're trying to do today. It only has the words in front of it. Everything you don't tell it, it invents a stand-in for, and then answers as if that stand-in were true.
Ask it to "write a welcome email" and it has to guess who the email is from, who it's going to, what they signed up for, and what you want them to feel. Six blanks, six guesses, and a reply that's technically about welcome emails but useless for yours.
Why skipping it hurts most
Context is the input people skip first, because in your head the situation is obvious. You know it's for your skincare brand, for customers who just bought, in your friendly-but-direct voice. The model knows none of that. The gap between what's obvious to you and what's on the page is exactly where the answer goes wrong.
Adding context is also the highest-leverage thing you can do, because it improves every other part of the answer at once. A model that knows the situation picks better words, better structure, and better examples without you asking. You're not writing a longer prompt to be thorough. You're removing the guesses.
How to give it well
Good context answers three quiet questions the model is always asking: Who is this for? What's the situation? What matters here? You don't need a paragraph. A line or two usually does it.
Here's a prompt with no context:
Write a product description for our new moisturizer.
And the same request with context:
Context: We're a small skincare brand. This moisturizer is fragrance-free and aimed at people with sensitive skin who've been let down by heavier creams. Our customers care about short ingredient lists and honesty, not hype. Write a product description for it.
Same task, completely different result. The second one knows who's reading, what they've been burned by, and what tone earns their trust. You didn't teach the model to write. You told it where it's standing.

Context sets up everything else
Context is the ground the other five inputs stand on. Once the model knows the situation, the Role you assign has something to be expert about, the Objective has a real target, the Format fits the actual use, the Tone matches the actual reader, and your Conditions protect the actual stakes. Skip context and the rest of CROFTC is guessing along with the model.
If you change one habit, make it this: before you ask for the output, spend one line telling the model where it is. Who it's writing for, what the situation is, what matters. That single line turns a generic answer into yours.
